MY JOURNEY TO BECOMING A HEALTH BEHAVIOR CHANGE SPECIALIST
It all started my freshman year in college when I got a phone call and my mom was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. To this day I can remember the pain in her voice as she told me the news. That same week I changed my major to Dietetics (nutrition).
I then discovered my passion, I wanted to alleviate and eliminate as much as possible people's suffering and sense of helplessness as they faced this chronic disease. I also wanted to prevent as many people as possible from getting it.
I worked really hard, I was the president of the Dietetics club at my University,
I hosted talks at the library, churches, partnered with our local soup kitchen to serve warm healthy meals, to those who couldn't afford it.
I received the Dietetic Student of the year award from the North Alabama Dietetic Association. My last year in undergrad, I received, the Outstanding Senior Award from the Alabama Dietetic Association. I even received The Sodexo African American Leadership Award.
Later, while working as a Dietitian at hospitals and outpatient offices, I noticed a pattern that would change the way I did medical nutrition therapy forever. I saw some patients who knew every single word in the health education classes but were still coming back to the hospital because they were not compliant with the recommendations. This experience really made clear to me the fact that when it comes to behavior change, information is not enough.
Another interesting fact I noticed, was that for some cases even accountability was not enough. They either would return back to their old ways a while after the program ended, or they would drop out of the program because they couldn't keep up with the recommendations. Unwilling to give up my mission to improve peoples' health effectively,
I KNEW IN THAT MOMENT THAT I HAD TO DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT.
I was determined to learn how to make positive new habits as sticky, as old and negative habits.
IT WAS REALLY TOUGH!
I spent a year doing online research, reading blogs, listening to podcasts, reading printed and electronic books. There was so much information out there about behavior change. I used myself as the guinea pig to try these different methods to see which one were actually effective.
I noticed that some methods required a lot of willpower, struggling. When I failed I noticed a lost in my self-confidence which had a ripple effect in other areas of my life. I began questioning my capabilities and grew sadder with each system that didn't work.
I knew that whatever system that I would create, it was vital that the system would not only change behavior but should also add joy and a greater sense of well-being in people's lives.
Another thing that I also noticed was that a lot of the new behavior change methods that I found in my research were rooted in new age and mysticism. I saw a lot of comments from people who were Christians, expressing that they were apprehensive about following these methods because they felt they violated their relationship with God. As a Christian myself, I felt a strong desire to create a health behavior change system that Christians can freely participate in without feeling like they are compromising their faith.
Therefore, I pursued my masters in positive psychology and created the Cheerful Habits Method.
THEN LOICA MARC THE CHEERFUL HABITS COACH WAS BORN
Now I am known as the cheerful habits coach, helping people build habits with ease and joy in order to prevent chronic disease and live a happier and healthier life.
